Billboard Update
- The City of Houston has filed a motion for summary judgment in its lawsuit against Coastal Signs in the 333rd District Court for the allegedly illegal billboard in the western portion of Afton Oaks. This motion will be heard on February 8, and a trial date for the full case is on the docket for February 11. Meanwhile the sign remains as-is in the 4700 block of Banning, albeit now with landscaping around the massive base.
City Planning and High Density Meetings
- The City of Houston is holding separate meetings that both relate to Inner Loop development. The first is a series on both Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week at St. Lukes's United Methodist Church on Westheimer from 6:00-9:00, and it's called the "University Corridor Workshop." The session is to provide input to the City on how it designs its streets and other infrastructure along METRO's rail corridors, whereever METRO finally puts them. This program covers the University Line corridor, though the City points out that this planning exercise will not have any bearing on where METRO actually puts the line. See the attachment link to this email for more details. The second is the the City's task force on High Density Development, formed in the wake of the potential Ashby Street Highrise development and the City's potential responses. This group, chaired by Councilwoman Toni Lawrence, is meeting again this Thursday at 5:30pm in the Mayor's conference room, City Hall basement. It will meet again on Monday, February 4 at 1pm in City Council chambers, 2nd floor. Meetings have been well-attended, so if you go, go early. For background on the meetings held so far, click HERE.
Trees
- Tree protection and remains a priority for the neighborhood. If you would like to nominate an area to receive a tree as part of AOCC's tree initiative, please email trees@aftonoaks.org. Tree protection is a requirement of AOCC's deed restrictions, and your Board plans to vigorously enforce the rules against developers and others who remove trees without seeking permission.
Crime Report
- Motor vehicle break-ins represent about 85%+ of the crime in Afton Oaks. The Board of AOCC has been investigating alternatives to provide additional cost-effective enhancement of security, but please remember (and remind your guests) not to leave valuables visible in your car or truck. This is a problem through-out the 77027 zip code, however, as break-ins are occurring in the parking lots of schools, churches and private clubs in the middle of the day. The crimes occur quickly, and the thieves can be sophisticated in their methods of identifying easy targets.
- The regular quarterly meeting
of the AOCC will be held at Looscan Library at 6:30pm on Thursday,
February 21st. Come hear the latest on nearby development, METRO,
traffic, crime and ask questions. We are working on an invitation
to one of our elected representatives, either City or State. More to
come.
Used Household and Construction Items
- If you're remodeling your house, keep in mind that Habitat for Humanity operates a resale store called "ReStore" on Loop 610 near Gulfgate that accepts used building materials, including doors, windows, lighting, appliances, plumbing fixtures and more. While they appreciate drop-offs, they will also pick-up. See http://www.houstonhabitat.org/restore/index.php or call (713) 643-1100 for details. This location also works with The Furniture Bank (http://www.furniturebankhouston.org) which accepts furniture for distribution via a unique network of more than 60 supporting local service organizations. For information, see their website or call (713) 842-9771. Wherever you choose to donate (and there are many other fine charities in Houston), please consider that someone else may value your reusable items.
- Enjoy writing? The Afton Oaks Post, the semi-annual newsletter of the AOCC wants you! There's a need for profiles of interesting neighbors, nearby restaurants or businesses or other stories of interest, or perhaps you might want to write a column on a topic of your choosing (subject to editing, of course....). If you have an interest, email newsletter@aftonoaks.org.
